Cutting an onion releases a fine spray of droplets. These droplets have an enzyme called lachrymatory containing sulphur- compounds, which react to produce a powerful irritant called Syn-propanethial-S-oxide. When a drop attacks your eye, you respond by producing a profuse flow of tears to try and wash the irritation away.
Protect Your Eyes From Onions
We cry because our eyes are irritated by droplets the onion releases when we chop them. Here are a few ways we can help stop that from occurring:
Cold onion react slower when cut, keep cold onion for at least 30 minutes before chopping & peeling or try freezing for about 10 to 15 minutes before slicing into it.
Try to chop the onions with a very sharp, stainless steel knife under water before starting to slice. The water will help engross the sulfur compounds and a sharp knife will make a cleaner cut, staining the onion cells less which hypothetically means causing less reaction.
Use a Candle:
Light a candle near the cutting board or light a burner. Cut onions as close to flame as possible without danger of being burned. The heat will lure the sulfur to it and away from your eyes.
Slice Of Bread:
If you put a piece of bread with your mouth, the bread absorbs the gases and averts them from making it up to your eyes. It is used by different people and is confirmed to be effective.
Gum emboldens you to breathe through your mouth and, in so doing, gasp the gases before they reach your eyes. They won’t destroy your esophagus, it’s a safe way.
There are over four hundred kinds of vegetable in the onion, all of which contain opposing levels of enzymes. Fall and winter onions, such as white, yellow, red, and Spanish onions, are more spicy and piquant, onions like shallots, scallions, and garlic, are virtually tearless & Protect Your Eyes From Onions.
Lightly spray the cutting board with a vinegar and water mixture, vinegar seemingly stops the sulfur reaction. If it doesn’t do the trick, try full asset vinegar. This may affect the flavor of the cooked onions. This is the easiest way to make the tears go away & Protect Your Eyes From Onions.
Whenever you are trying to peel onions, try to do it near windows or duct. Place a pedestal or table fan near your work surface or on a ceiling vent can make vapors away & Protect Your Eyes From Onions.
